Strawberry season is here, and there’s no better way to enjoy these juicy, sweet berries than with a collection of recipes that use fresh strawberries!
From easy desserts to healthy snacks and breakfast ideas, this roundup has something for everyone.

Plus, I’ll share tips for selecting, storing, and freezing strawberries so you can enjoy them even longer.
From classic summer desserts like strawberry shortcake, to rich and creamy strawberry smoothies, or homemade strawberry jam, these recipes highlight the best ways to use ripe and juicy fresh strawberries.
How to pick the sweetest berries
Here are five easy tips for picking the best strawberries at the store or farmers’ market:
- Look for bright red color – Strawberries don’t ripen after being picked, so choose berries that are deep red all over with no white or green spots near the stem.
- Check the leaves – Fresh, green leaves mean the strawberries were picked recently. If the leaves are dry or wilted, they might not be very fresh.
- Give them a sniff – The best strawberries will have a sweet, fragrant smell. If they don’t smell like strawberries, they probably won’t taste very good either!
- Look for mold or soft spots – Avoid any containers with mushy, bruised, or moldy berries, as they can spoil the rest quickly.
- Size doesn’t always matter – Smaller strawberries are often sweeter than the oversized ones, so don’t just go for the biggest berries in the bunch!
How to store them so they last
Here are five easy tips to keep your strawberries fresh in the fridge for as long as possible:
- Don’t wash them right away – Moisture speeds up spoilage, so hold off on washing until you’re ready to eat or use them. If you must wash them, dry them thoroughly before storing.
- Keep them dry – Store strawberries in a breathable container lined with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture and prevent mold.
- Use a ventilated container – The plastic clamshell they come in is fine, but a glass container with the lid slightly open allows better airflow and keeps them fresher longer. Or use a container specifically for refrigerated berry storage like these Airtight Food Storage Containers for fruits and vegetables.
- Remove any bad berries – If you spot a moldy or mushy strawberry, take it out immediately to prevent it from spoiling the rest.
- Store them in the crisper drawer – The fridge’s crisper drawer maintains ideal humidity levels, keeping your strawberries fresher for a few extra days.
Tips for Freezing and Thawing Fresh Strawberries
Want to enjoy fresh strawberries year-round? Freezing them the right way keeps them sweet, juicy, and full of flavor. Here’s how to do it:
- Wash and dry before freezing – Unlike refrigerating, you do want to wash strawberries before freezing. Rinse them well, remove the stems, and dry them completely to prevent ice crystals from forming.
- Freeze in a single layer first – Spread strawberries out on a baking sheet and freeze them for a few hours before transferring them to a freezer bag. This prevents them from clumping together and makes it easier to pull out a few berries at a time when you need them.
- Use airtight storage – Store frozen strawberries in a vacuum sealed bag, freezer-safe bag or container, removing as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn. I have been using a FoodSaver vacuum sealer for years and love it. You can check out a few of my favorite vacuum sealing supplies in my Amazon storefront.
- Label with the date – Frozen strawberries last up to 12 months, but for the best flavor, I try to use them within 6 months so they don't start tasting weird.
- Thawing depends on how you’ll use them – For baking or smoothies, use frozen strawberries as-is. For eating fresh, thaw them in the fridge for a few hours or run them under cool water for a quick defrost.
