During the holiday season when you are short on time these Peppermint OREO Truffles are very easy to make.
You only need a few ingredients to make them and they can be ready for a gift box or dessert tray in an hour or so.
Chocolate dipped cookie balls are perfect for a dessert tray or to give as hostess gift or homemade Christmas gifts.
You can make OREO Truffles for any holiday. Like these Pumpkin Spice OREO Truffles or Elf On The Shelf OREO Truffles.
Ingredients
OREO Truffles are made with three basic ingredients-OREO sandwich cookies, cream cheese and dipping chocolate or candy coating.
You can add peppermint extract to make them taste like a candy cane for the Christmas season.
- family size package or original OREO sandwich cookies
- cream cheese
- peppermint extract (optional- you can skip the extract if you like or buy the Mint OREO cookies instead.)
- chocolate wafers, chips or Almond Bark candy coating for dipping
- holiday sprinkles for decorations
Directions
Step 1: Open the package of Oreo cookies and count out 40 cookies. Set the extra cookies aside to crumble and use as a topping.
Step 2: Place the whole cookies into a food processor. Place the lid on and hit the pulse or high setting.
Run the food processor until all of the cookies are turned into fine crumbs.
Step 3: Add the softened cream cheese to the food processor.
Pulse or run on low until the cream cheese is mixed into the cookie crumbs.
If adding peppermint flavoring add it now and pulse for about a minute to mix it in to the truffle filling.
Step 4: Transfer the filling to a bowl. Use a 1 inch dough scoop to measure the filling. Roll the Oreo cookie balls into similar sized balls.
Step 5: Place each dough ball on a cookie sheet that has been lined with parchment or wax paper. Place the tray into the refrigerator to chill.
Step 6: While the dough is chilling melt the chocolate wafers, almond bark or candy melts for the truffle coating.
I used this double electric chocolate melting pot to melt chocolate wafers and vanilla almond bark.
You can use the microwave or the double boiler method to melt the chocolate if you don't have a melting pot.
Step 7: Use a fork or candy dipping tool to lower the truffle into the melted chocolate.
Lift the ball up and let the excess chocolate drip from the ball before transferring it to the lined baking sheet.
As you dip each truffle sprinkle the tops with holiday themed sprinkles, crushed cookies or crushed candy canes
Step 8: Place the trays in a safe area on a counter top or tabletop in a cool spot in your home to allow the chocolate coating to hard. The time it takes to harden will depend on the temperature in your home. It took about two hours for me.
Step 9: Trim the chocolate at the base of each truffle with a sharp straight edge knife to clean up the edges.
Serve Peppermint OREO Truffles in mini paper cups on mini cake stands for a pretty presentation on your dessert table at your holiday celebration.
Or package them up in a decorative holiday tin or candy box to give as gifts.
Bonus Tip: Do not place the tray in the refrigerator to harden the chocolate coating. After years of making cake pops I have learned that the quick change of temperature of warm chocolate going into a cold refrigerator causes moisture to form on the chocolate as it hardens.
Storing OREO Truffles: Because OREO Truffles are made with cream cheese they will need to be stored in the refrigerator. Once the chocolate has hardened place the candy in single layers in an air tight container layering them with parchment paper to protect them from getting damaged.
