Crock Pot Turkey Chili
Today's crock pot recipe is this delicious Crock Pot Turkey Chili recipe that I made using a surprising ingredient.
Chili made with dried beans is one of my favorite ways to make chili. I love using dried beans for the added nutritional value.
Buying dried beans is a very good way to stock your pantry inexpensively. You can use dried beans in so many ways and you will always have beans on hand that last for such a long time in the pantry.
I don't know about you but I am depending more and more on my pantry items to make my favorite recipes.
This week's Crock Pot recipe is made with ingredients that I have on hand. Either I had the ingredients in my pantry, freezer, or I had the fresh vegetables I bought at the store.
Best Way To Thicken Chili
Have you ever wondered what the best way to thicken chili is? Do you always have lumps after you thicken chili with flour?
I love to use cornstarch and water as a thickener. You will never have lumps in your chili or soups if you use cornstarch as a thickener and cornstarch doesn't change the flavor.
To thicken chili with cornstarch all you do is mix equal amounts of cornstarch and cool water, mix together until the cornstarch dissolves, and add the slurry to the cooking vessel.
For this chili recipe, I mixed two tablespoons of cornstarch with two tablespoons of cool water then stirred it into the crock pot after my chili was done cooking. Perfect thickened chili in minutes.
Ingredients
- 15.5 oz bag Hursts Slow Cooker Chili Beans
- 1 lb ground turkey, browned, see notes on substitutions
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 tablespoons minced garlic
- 3 medium tomatoes diced or 14 oz can diced tomatoes
- 1 cup diced bell pepper
- 7 cups chicken broth, turkey broth or water
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch and 2 tablespoons cool water
Prep
- Dice the tomatoes, onion, bell pepper and mince the garlic if using fresh.
- In a large skillet cook the ground turkey for about 3 minutes, breaking it up into small pieces then add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet.
- Continue cooking until the turkey is no longer pink. Set aside while prepping the beans.
- Open the bag of Hurst's Slow Cooker Chili mix and remove the seasoning packet and set aside.
- Rinse the dried beans under cold running water. Pick out any debris and discard.
Directions
- Cook the ground turkey and prep the beans.
- Pour the rinsed dried beans into an 8-quart crock pot.
- Add the browned ground turkey, onion, and garlic to the crock pot.
- Add the diced tomatoes and bell pepper.
- Open the chili seasoning packet and add to the crock pot.
- Pour the chicken broth, turkey broth, or water into the crock pot. Mix with a wooden spoon to combine.
- Place the lid on the crock pot and cook on high for 6 to 8 hours or until the beans are tender. If cooking on low cook for 8 to 10 hours or until the beans are tender.
- Makes 8 servings.
Recommended Recipe Substitutions
Recipe substitutions can be made with this or any of your favorite recipes. For this turkey chili recipe, I used frozen turkey burgers I had in the freezer.
You can use ground beef, ground turkey, ground sausage or ground chicken meat to make this recipe if you don't have ground turkey on hand.
If you don't have a fresh onion on hand you can use dried onion flakes or even ground onion powder to make this chili recipe.
I used chicken broth to make this chili recipe but you can use turkey broth or water. The broth gives the chili a richer flavor.
