Crock Pot Split Pea Ham Soup is a very dear family recipe to me. It is now one of my favorite leftover holiday ham crock pot soup recipes.

I grew up eating homemade split pea soup. I absolutely love it. My mom made it on the stove in a pot.

It was a sure thing every holiday my mother baked a ham. Every single holiday when my mother or grandmother baked a ham I knew we would be eating split pea soup in the next couple of days.

Money was very tight when I was a child and my mother and grandmother knew how to stretch a dollar.

Nothing went to waste and that included a ham bone. No matter how stripped of meat that ham bone was they would use it to flavor a big pot of soup.

Family Split Pea Soup recipe

My family never put potatoes in their split pea soup and that is the way I like it.

Big chunks of ham, some sliced carrots, and dried split peas. An onion, bay leaves, salt, and pepper is used to season the soup.

There is no need to go all crazy with the ingredient list. This basic split pea recipe is delicious.

I used chicken broth as the liquid but you can also use water if you don't have any chicken stock on hand.

The chicken stock adds a nice rich flavor so if you have it use it.

My mom or grandmother cooked their split pea and ham soup in a big pot on the stovetop. I updated the family split pea soup recipe so I could cook it in my crock pot. It turned out perfect.

Weird Food I ate as a Kid

When I was a kid and we didn't have crackers to eat with a bowl of Split Pea Ham Soup I would roll up bread balls and drop them in my bowl of soup.

Has anyone else ever done that? No?

I was a weird kid I guess but, the reality of growing up poor is you make do with what you have on hand.

I also ate fresh carrot slices on a cheese sandwich with mayonnaise if we didn't have potato chips. Hey, don't knock it until you tried it.

I subsituted lentals for split peas as well as the liquid from the ham's pan and was very pleased with the results.

Split Pea soup is one of my all time favorite soups, and somehow I have just never made it at home until now. I never have a meaty ham bone lying around, so I guess I just never bothered. Until my mother in law shared a little secret with me. If you have a Honey Baked Ham store in your area, that's the place to go for a nice meaty ham bone for soups. The one near me has a whole chest freezer full and they're not very expensive. I paid about 5 bucks for one and it was a really nice meaty one.

This soup is super easy to make, and absolutely insanely delicious! Leftovers do thicken up overnight, so you may want to add a little more liquid to thin it out a bit. I take my left over broth, and freeze them in an ice cube tray, so if I ever need a bit of broth added to something, like say this soup as leftovers, I can just pop a broth cube in it as it heats up.

I had no idea you could buy the ham bones from the Honey Baked Ham store. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful tip!
