- granulated instant coffee: buy a good coffee brand for the best smoothest coffee flavor.
- water
- granulated sugar
- 3 whole vanilla beans, divided
- Vodka: buy a decent brand of vodka
- a large glass jar with tight fitting lid
Directions
- Step 1: Place the granulated coffee, water, sugar, and one split vanilla bean into a large pot, heat on low until the sugar dissolves.
- Step 2: Increase heat and bring to a low boil. Stir occasionally until the coffee crystals have dissolved. Coffee foam will float to the top of the mixture.
- Step 3: Remove the pot from the heat and allow to cool to room temperature.
- Step 4: Once the mixture is cool scoop as much as possible of the foam from the top of the coffee syrup. Discard the foam in the trash or wash it down the sink.
- Step 5: Pour the vodka into a large glass jar. Split the two remaining vanilla beans and add them to the glass jar with the vodka.
- Step 6: Pour the coffee syrup into the jar. Gently stir with a large spoon to combine. Place a tight fitting lid on the jar.
- Step 7: Place the jar in a cool dark cabinet and steep for 4 to 6 weeks before using. The longer you allow it to steep the richer the flavor will be.
- Step 8: After steeping strain the homemade Kahlua through a coffee filter to remove any small bits of vanilla bean or undissolved crystals before bottling in gift bottles.
Bottle in individual bottles for gifts or return the strained Kahlua to the larger jar for storage.
Store in a dark cabinet away from direct sunlight.
Makes about 2 quarts.

Can you use monk fruit sweetener in place of the sugar or part of it?
Arlene Mobley
Hi Gale
I have never used monk fruit sweetener so I am not sure. You could make a small test batch to see how it turns out.

I just have to make this mmm
Mary Beth Elderton
Yum!!! I will love this. If I start today, I can give some for the week after Christmas. Thank You!
Arlene Mobley
Mary Beth you could give it for Christmas gifts with a use after date on your gift tag. Saying something like best if cured until xxxx with the 6-week date. I've done this with my homemade vanilla extract.
Teresa
How long does this keep after making
Arlene Mobley
Theresa
Homemade Kahlua stays good a very long time. If kept refrigerated it could last longer. Google says commercial Kahlua will last 3 to 4 years. I have some left that I made back in 2016 and I just tasted it. It tastes the same as it did when I made it.
If you're giving it as a gift you could put a tag on it that says something like best if consumed by and put a two-year expiration date on it.
It tastes amazing when used to make cupcake frosting. I made Chocolate Cupcakes with Kahlua Buttercream Frosting (for 21 and over only) https://flouronmyface.com/chocolate-cupcakes-with-kahlua-buttercream/

Question: Why are steps 1 & 2 duplicate? Want to make sure I understand the process correctly. Sorry, OCD. I read through everything including comments, and didn't see anything about it. Apologies if I'm being dense. TY 🙂
Arlene Mobley
Denver that was a typo. Thanks for letting me know. I updated the instructions.
