How to Make Homemade Coleslaw

Coleslaw is perfect served with hot dogs, burgers or ribs. And don't forget to make some brown sugar baked beans to go along with all the other food.
Sweet Coleslaw Recipe
I’m very particular about my coleslaw. I want it made just so.
I want the dressing to be slightly sweet and tangy and I want the cabbage chopped very fine.
I love serving this homemade sweet coleslaw recipe with my easy Crock Pot Pulled Pork Sandwiches. Or with my Easy Crock Pot Pulled Chicken recipe.
Prep
- Rinse a small head of cabbage off and remove some of the outer leaves and discard.
- Using a sharp knife carefully cut the head of cabbage into quarters.
- Cut the core out of one piece and use the knife to thinly slice the cabbage. Then cut the cabbage pieces into very tiny dice (see the video for how I cut cabbage into very small pieces for coleslaw.
- Rince one medium carrot and peel with a vegetable peeling. Finely grate the carrot using a vegetable planer.
- Place the cabbage and carrot into a medium mixing bowl. Set aside.
- Make the coleslaw dressing.
Ingredients
- ⅓ cup sugar
- ¼ cup milk
- ¼ cup real buttermilk (no substitutions)
- ½ cup Hellman's Mayonnaise
- 2 ½ tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 ½ tablespoon white vinegar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 4 cups finely chopped cabbage
- ¼ cup shredded carrot
Instructions
- Mix the dressing ingredients in a large spouted measuring cup and set aside.
- Chop cabbage finely. See video.
- Peel and grate the carrot.
- Toss the cabbage and carrot with the coleslaw dressing.
- Cover the bowl and refrigerate at least 2 hours before serving. Overnight is best.
