Cookie Dough
You can use your favorite Spritz cookie recipe or follow the recipe I used with my Valentine's Day cookies.
Step 1: Mix the cookie dough following the cookie recipe directions.
Step 2: Divide the cookie dough into thirds and put the dough into 3 separate small bowls.
Step 3: In the first bowl squeeze one drop of pink gel food coloring. This will make the lightest colored pink cookies.
In the second bowl squeeze 9 drops of pink gel food coloring, which will make the medium dark Ombre cookies.
In the third bowl squeeze 12 drops of pink food coloring to make the darkest of the pink cookies.
Tips for coloring cookie dough
- Keep in mind that the color of the unbaked cookie dough will vary slightly from the baked cookies.
- The type of food coloring you use will make a big difference in the finish cookie colors. Do not use liquid food coloring. Use a gel or paste type of food coloring for the best colors. I recommend Americolor gel food coloring. It will yield the best and brightest cookie colors.
- Mix the food coloring into the cookie dough one color at a time starting with the palest pink color. You will be able to judge how many drops of food coloring to use in the next batch of cookie dough.
- Different brands of gel food coloring will have a different color intensity.
Step 4: Mix each bowl of dough until the gel food coloring is completely mixed in without any streaks of color visible.
Mix well until the cookie dough is evenly colored and there are no streaks of food coloring visible in the dough.
Step 5: Preheat the oven to 350 F. degrees.
Step 6: Fill a Spritz cookie dough press with the dough. Press cookies onto an aluminum baking sheet. Repeat until you have used all of the palest pink colored dough.
Cookie press tip: Wash and dry all parts of the cookie press when you change over to each colored batch of cookie dough. This will prevent the next batch of cookies from have streaks of the previous colored cookie dough.
Step 7: Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes just until the edges of the cookies are slightly golden.
Remove the baking sheet from the oven and place the baking pan on a cooling rack for 5 minutes. Transfer cooled cookies to a cooling rack. Repeat with all three colors of the cookie dough.
Step 8: Cool the cookies completely before decorating.
