This Blood Orange Smash Cocktail is my take on a Royal Smash Cocktail. Smash cocktails are easy for the home mixologist to make.

A traditional Royal Smash uses Royal Combier which I did not have on hand instead I used Triple Sec.

How to make a Smash Cocktail

Smash cocktails are one of the easiest cocktails to start with if you'd like to create your own custom cocktail recipe. You can make any flavor Smash you'd like when you have a few simple bar ingredients on hand.

Most Smash cocktail recipes start with a spirit, a sweetener, an herb and a seasonal fruit.

Because the Smash cocktail is so versatile you can add a touch of your favorite carbonated water if you like a little bubbly in your Smash.

As the cocktail name suggests you will need to smash the fruit and fresh mint to release their flavors. A cocktail muddler will get the job done quickly.

Anyone who enjoys making cocktails at home will get good use of a cocktail muddler. Especially if you enjoy mixing up some mojitos during the summer months.

A Blood Orange Smash recipe served in a highball glass with a sprig or mint and slices of fresh blood oranges for garnish.

Blood Orange Cocktails

For this Smash cocktail, I used fresh blood oranges, fresh sweet mint from my Cocktail Herb Garden, and Triple Sec. Blood orange cocktails have a distinct flavor you will not find with any other citrus. They make wonderful cocktails like this Blood Orange Bourbon Cocktail.

I passed on adding a sweetener because the blood orange and Triple Sec are sweet enough as it is.

If you can't find fresh Blood Oranges you could use a navel orange instead but a Blood Orange has a distinct flavor regular oranges are missing.

There are also Blood Orange soda's available that could be substituted but the blood orange flavors will shine through much better when you can use a fresh blood orange.

Cocktail Glasses

Most cocktail recipes come with a suggested cocktail glass type to serve the cocktail recipe in. A Smash is typically served in a highball glass but you could also serve it in a Collins glass.

Many of the cocktail glasses you see in my cocktail recipes are vintage cocktail glasses.
