Bought a bunch of fresh pineapple on sale? Or does a recipe call for crushed pineapple and all you have on hand is a fresh pineapple or canned pineapple chunks? It's easy to learn how to make crushed pineapple at home with a food processor or blender.
This is a great recipe I use whenever I find fresh pineapple on sale. I like to process the pineapple down into crushed or pineapple chunks to have on hand for my favorite pineapple recipes. Then I can make homemade pineapple sauce ice cream topping whenever want.
If I find pineapples on sale for an amazing price I will make canned pineapple chunks.
You can freeze crushed pineapple up to six months. Once thawed it can be used in place of canned.

- A whole fresh pineapple or canned pineapple chunks or rings
I am using a fresh pineapple for this recipe. But if all I had in my pantry was a can of pineapple chunks or rings I would use the same technique to make crushed pineapple for any recipe.
👇See the detailed step by step directions below!
Step by Step Directions
- Prep: Trim the top and bottom off so it is easier to stand the pineapple up to be cored and peeled. Coring and peeling the fruit is very easy to do when you use a metal pineapple corer like the one I used. It works like a dream. Plastic corers are a struggle to work with. You can also do this using a sharp knife but it is so much easier using the corer.
- Step 1: Place the fruit onto a cookie sheet, baking tray with low sides or a large bowl to catch any juice.
- Step 2: Insert the pineapple corer over and centered on the pineapple core. Press down and start twisting the handle clockwise to cut into the pineapple flesh. Twist until the corer comes out the bottom. Once you cut through the bottom twist the corer in the opposite direction and pull the fruit out of the center of the peel.
- Step 3: Separate the slices and cut them into chunks.
Tip: Using a pineapple corer will remove almost all of the eyes and you won't have to worry about cutting them out by hand.
- Step 4: Place the pineapple pieces and any juice into the bowl of a food processor or blender. Pulse until the pineapple pieces have been broken up and turned into small crushed pineapple pieces. It only takes 2 to 3 pulses.
- Step 4: Pour the crushed pineapple and juice into a container and refrigerate until needed.
- Step 5: Store the pineapple in an airtight container up to a week in the refrigerator.
Pineapple Drink
Set the peels aside to make a fermented pineapple drink. Save them and the core to make Tepache-a fermented Pineapple Drink. You can refrigerate the peels for a couple of days to make the pineapple drink. Recipe coming soon!
