Peppermint Hot Chocolate Mix is extremely easy to make when you need a few inexpensive homemade Christmas gifts to give to a teacher or a few friends.

Make these cute homemade Christmas Peppermint Hot Cocoa Mix in a Mug. It takes only about 15 minutes to mix it together.

Then you can package it in pretty Christmas cellophane bags and tuck it into a pretty Christmas mug for an easy and inexpensive homemade Christmas gift.

Homemade Christmas Gifts Peppermint Hot Cocoa Mix in a Mug recipe and instructions

I shared this post way back in December of 2011 for the first time. Today I am giving it an update and resharing it again.

This peppermint hot cocoa mix recipe has been floating around the internet for many, many years.

You will be able to find the same recipe with some slight variations all over the place if you do a google search.

This is the recipe I have used just about every Christmas for the past ten years or more to make homemade Christmas gifts.

How to make Peppermint Hot Cocoa Mix for Christmas Hot Cocoa Mix in a Jar Gifts

Peppermint Hot Chocolate In a Jar Recipe

This instant Peppermint Hot Chocolate Mix recipe will make about 20 cups of powdered instant peppermint hot cocoa mix. You can use it to make Hot Chocolate in a Mug gift or Peppermint Hot Chocolate In a Jar.

One measured cup of the cocoa mix is enough to make 3 servings of peppermint hot cocoa when mixed with water or milk.

I prefer making my hot cocoa mix with milk because it makes a much creamier hot cocoa.

You will need one cup of hot cocoa mix for each Hot Cocoa Mix in a Mug Christmas gift.

Depending on how you package this Peppermint Hot Cocoa Mix you can easily make 16-20 cellophane bags holding one cup of cocoa mix each plus a couple of handfuls of mini marshmallows.

To make Peppermint Hot Cocoa Mix in a Mug Christmas Gifts

I packaged some of mine in a pretty Christmas cellophane treat bag, topped it off with some mini marshmallows and tucked it in a Christmas coffee mug I bought from the dollar store.

If you don’t need to make 20 homemade Christmas Gifts or you don’t want to end up with 20 cups of instant hot cocoa mix you can easily half the recipe.

What I do is make this large batch of homemade hot cocoa mix to make my Christmas gifts.

I then put what is left over in an airtight container and my family enjoys the hot cocoa mix that is left over.

Some years I will make large homemade cocoa in a jar gifts which uses about 2 cups of the instant cocoa mix compared to one cup of hot cocoa mix you need for the cocoa in a mug gift.

This instant hot cocoa mix can last indefinitely as long as it is stored in an airtight container.

Ingredients

  • 10 cups of powdered milk or a 25.6-ounce package Carnation Instant Milk
  • 3 cups of non-dairy coffee creamer
  • 3 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 6 cups of Nestle Quick or a large 18 oz container of chocolate milk mix
  • 4 Giant Peppermint Candy Sticks or a box of 12 candy canes, crushed
  • mini marshmallows, optional
  • Christmas cellophane bags with ties
  • Christmas Mugs (bought at the Dollar Store)

Directions

  1. Sift all of the powdered ingredients together in a very large bowl. I sift the powdered milk first because sometimes I sift it twice to get all the lumps out.
  2. After you have all the dry ingredients sifted stir with a large wooden spoon to evenly combine the dry ingredients together. You don’t want streaks of white from the powdered milk or the powdered creamer.
  3. Take the peppermint sticks or candy canes and place them in a large ziplock bag. Use a rolling pin to crush the peppermint sticks into small pieces. Divide the cocoa mix into two-gallon size ziplock bags if you would like to make two different flavors of hot cocoa mix. (One Peppermint and one plain with mini marshmallows)
  4. To one bag add the crushed peppermint sticks. Shake the bag so the crushed peppermint candy is mixed in with the cocoa mix.
  5. With the second bag of cocoa mix you could leave it plain or add some mini marshmallows and shake up the bag so they are mixed in with the cocoa mix. This will give you different flavors cocoa mix to make your gifts with if you want.
  6. Makes 20 cups of instant hot cocoa mix.

How to make a cup of Peppermint Hot Cocoa

I noticed that the measurements say cup then ounce? Which is accurate as 10 cups would be 80 Ounces?

The ounces is for the size box of powdered milk I purchased. It is 10 cups of powdered milk.
