Keeping It Real: Decorating Cookies

Decorating Easter Cookies

This weekend I attempted some cookie decorating. I have been looking at beautiful pictures of gorgeously decorated cookies on the internet for awhile now and this past weekend I decided to bake and decorate some Easter cookies myself.

Cookie Decorating

Usually I don't have problems when I set out on a baking adventure. This time nothing seemed to go the way I wanted it to or expected it to.

The  night before I mixed up the cookie dough and baked the cookies.  They turned out okay.  For some reason some of the cookies developed small bubbles while they were baking. : (

The bubbles weren't there when I rolled out the dough but developed in the oven. I could deal with that. I'd just cover it with frosting, right....

Cookie decorating in action

My cookie recipe and my frosting recipe come from one of the King Arthur Magazines. I have been using both recipes for years now and
never had a problem. I should have known better. Because I wanted these
cookies to turn out beautiful so I could of course post gorgeous pictures of my beautifully decorated cookies on my blog they were doomed to fail. Fast forward to the next day.

I mix up a batch of glazing frosting. I wanted a pretty color background for my awesome decorating skills to shine through.
NOT! ( I am not a professional baker/cookie decorator but I sometimes try to play one on the internet!)

Cookie Decorating: Glaze

I did not like the a way a few of the colors turned out! Next I realize
that I need some equipment that I do not have.

I have thought about buying those little accordion squeeze bottles that make glazing  and decorating cookies so easy in the past but I did not buy them so while I was trying to perfectly glaze the cookies with a baby spoon and a butter knife all I kept thinking was that I should not be attempting this with out the right tools.

And because of that thought I knew I would not be happy with my decorating skills. Not even my sweet vintage spring apron could help.

Okay I've got enough cookies glazed and I set them aside to harden. I wasn't expecting the grand kids to be here but one spent the night and the other one showed up just when I was starting to pull out my baking stuff. No problem. It caused a slight delay here and there but I was on a mission.

Next up is the royal icing I plan to use to trick out my cookies. I don't know if it was because I was now in a hurry with all the delays
or what but my royal icing was too thin. Only I didn't figure that out until I put some in a piping bag. Oh and my tip was too big also. Maybe I should title this blog post "What Not To Do When Decorating Cookies"

Obviously not all of my baking adventures are successful, to me anyway. But my four year old granddaughter Hailey will have a blast plopping the royal icing all over these babies and then I'll watch as she dumps globs of colored sugar all over them while licking the icing off her fingers.

That's what it's all about any way!

Here she is with my other granddaughter Emma, who will probably get in on the cookie decorating action also!

Oops gotta go Hailey is here and she wants to decorate some cookies!

Awww, I'm sorry about all the maladies that occurred in this cookie situation. Maybe it was just an off day? I'm sure your cookies will turn out much better the next time. You're a seasoned baker so, I know it will!
