Easy Homemade Pizza Sauce

Homemade pizza sauce is one of the easiest recipes to make. Simmer 8 simple ingredients together and you have enough pizza sauce for multiply meals.

This great tasting homemade sauce is made in less than 30 minutes. It is delicious on grilled pizza, homemade personal pan pizza, calzones  or can be used for any favorite Italian pasta dish recipe like homemade ravioli you might make.

Once you learn the basics of how to make homemade pizza sauce and how to grill the perfect pizza you will be able to whip up a feast during the upcoming grilling season.

You probably have everything you need in your pantry already.

Homemade Pizza Sauce Ingredients

Basic homemade sauce ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.

Individual pizza sauce ingredients, in small bowls and cans.
  • canned crushed tomatoes
  • tomato paste
  • minced garlic, fresh or jarred
  • fresh or dried ground rosemary
  • dried ground Italian seasoning
  • olive oil
  • sugar
  • salt

Step by step directions

Homemade pizza sauce is very easy to make with just a few basic ingredients.

Step 1: In a heavy bottomed sauce pan heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil.

Combining crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sauteed garlic and rosemary in a pan.

Step 2: Add the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste to the pan. Stir to mix.

Step 3: Add the Italian seasoning, salt and sugar to the pan. Stir until the seasonings are mixed in well.

Step 4: Sauté the pizza sauce on medium for two minutes and bring to a boil.

Reduce heat to low and simmer for 30 to 45 minutes stirring occasionally.

Remove sauce pot from the heat source. Allow to cool to room temperature.

Spread 2 to 3 tablespoons of pizza source over a 8 or 9 inch homemade personal pan pizza dough.

I love using my homemade pizza sauce on top of my homemade pizza dough.

I often make a big batch of freezer meal pizza dough so I always have dough on hand.

Pizza sauce is made from a combination of tomatoes, tomato paste and Italian seasonings.

Recipe Expert Tips

  • tomatoes: You can substitute crushed fresh tomatoes or canned whole tomatoes in place of the canned crushed tomatoes.
  • meat sauce: you can add cooked ground beef to the recipe if you like a meat sauce on your pizza.
  • chunky sauce: you can add diced squash, onions, or peppers to make a chunky vegetable pizza sauce.

Freezing Pizza Sauce

This pizza sauce recipe will make about 5 ½ cups of pizza sauce. If you are cooking pizza for a crowd this recipe will be perfect.

Or you can make this pizza sauce recipe once and freeze the leftovers in portion sizes.

Ingredients  

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons chopped garlic (fresh or jarred)
  • 1 teaspoon minced fresh rosemary
  • 56 oz. canned crushed tomatoes ((two 28 oz. cans))
  • 6 oz. can of tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon sugar ((optional))
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions 

  • In a heavy bottom skillet or large pot heat the 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Add the fresh or dried rosemary and the minced garlic to the pan. Sauté on medium low for two minutes to wake up the flavor of the herbs.
  • Add the 2 cans of crushed tomatoes, tomato paste to the pan and mix until combined.
  • Add the Italian seasoning, salt and sugar to the pan. Mix well to combine.
  • Simmer the sauce until it comes to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer the pizza sauce for 30 to 45 minutes until thickened, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove pot from the burner and cool to room temperature.
  • Spread 2 to 3 tablespoons of the pizza sauce over an 8 or 9 inch size homemade pizza crust and add your favorite pizza toppings before baking. Use ¼ of a cup of sauce for a large 12 inch round pizza.

  • Use 2 to 3 tablespoons of pizza sauce for an 8 or 9 inch round personal pan sized pizza.
  • Use ¼ cup to ½ cup of sauce for a 12 inch pizza.
  • Makes 5 ½ cups of homemade pizza sauce.
  • Leftover pizza sauce can be frozen for another meal.
  • Add other vegetables, like diced peppers, squash, zucchini or eggplant to make a chunky vegetable pizza sauce.
