Breakfast casserole recipes are great for any breakfast, brunch or holiday morning. They are easy to make, feed a crowd and everyone always loves them. If you are trying to figure out what to make for a family style breakfast a casserole is the way to go.

While some might enjoy a meaty and creamy breakfast casserole like Biscuits and Gravy Casserole or a cheesy Amish Breakfast Casserole. I find that switching the flavor profiles up once in awhile with a sweet breakfast casserole is fun and delicious. Plus the sweet flavored ones are perfect served with a steaming cup of coffee.

For a special occasion you can always make more than one so your family or guests have the option of a sweet or savory serving.

Below is a quick look at the ingredients and directions. You can find the entire ingredient amounts and step by step directions in the recipe card below. P. S. You can also save your favorite recipes to your personal recipe box! ⬇️

Apple Casserole Ingredients

You only need 6 ingredients to make this recipe. I've included a few important recipe notes here. Be sure to read the recipe card below for the full ingredient list and amounts needed.

The breakfast casserole ingredients: apple pie filling, melted butter, canned cinnamon rolls, brown sugar, cinnamon and diced apples needed to make an apple fritter casserole.
  • Canned cinnamon rolls: Make sure you get the large Grands style cinnamon rolls. It will make a difference in the flaky layers of cinnamon sticky buns and pie filling. If you use the smaller biscuits the casserole is not going to fill the 9x13 inch casserole dish very much and there will be too much pie filling.
  • Apple pie filling: Use your favorite brand of pie filling. Homemade apple pie filling could also be used.
  • Dark brown sugar: I used dark brown sugar. There is a slight difference in the flavor of dark and light brown sugar. But if all you have on hand is the light go ahead and use it.
  • Diced apple: Use a sweet firm variety of apple that holds its shape when baked. I like to use Gala or Honeycrisp.

👇See the step by step directions below!

Recipe Prep

  • Preheat the oven to 375 F and grease a 9 by13 inch casserole dish.
  • Peel, core and dice the fresh apples.
  • Cut each cinnamon roll into about 12 bite size pieces and place them into a mixing bowl. Set the glaze container aside until needed.

Step by Step Directions

Follow the easy step by step directions to make the best oven baked apple breakfast recipe for any occasion, Sunday Brunch or a special occasion with the family.

  • Step 1: Carefully open the can of pie filling and using a sharp knife slice through the apple slices in the can cutting them into smaller bite size pieces. Or if you have fresh apples on hand you can make my Instant Pot Cinnamon Apples, chop them up and use 21 ounces in place of the canned apple pie filling.
  • Step 2: Combine the pie filling, brown sugar, melted butter, and ground cinnamon with the cut up pieces of cinnamon rolls. Toss together until all the dough pieces are coated. Pour into the greased 9 x 13 inch casserole dish.

  • Serve with crispy bacon or breakfast sausage on the side.
