Homemade Spicy Honey Mustard Sauce is the best chicken tender or wing dipping sauce. It is also great for dipping French fries, tator tots or potato wedges. A simple combination of 3 ingredients make the perfect dipping sauce!

The trick to this amazing mustard dipping sauce is the homemade Dijon mustard I used.

You can use store bought Dijon mustard, but if you really want a bold, homemade spicy honey mustard with incredible depth of flavor, it's worth taking the extra time to make my whole grain mustard recipe. The slightly fermented mustard seeds, combined with wine vinegar, white wine, and sugar, create a rich, balanced flavor you simply won't find in a commercial Dijon mustard jar.

Once you make the Dijon you then add some extra water to thin it out and grind all of the mustard seeds until it is smooth. Just slowly add about ¼ of a cup of water at a time until it reaches a creamier consistency. The consistency should be like pudding. It mounds on the spoon and slowly slides off if you hold the spoon upside down and the mustard seeds are completely blended.

My mustard recipe makes about 16 ounces. You will have plenty to make a double batch or more of honey mustard. Or use the leftovers anywhere you would use it normally.

Important Recipe Notes

The grainy Dijon Mustard recipe needs to be started 48 hours before you make can make the honey mustard. The whole brown and yellow mustard seeds will need to soak in the white wine, white wine vinegar, water and sugar for 48 hours before being ground into the mustard.

Mustard Seeds Flavor Profiles

Whole mustard seeds have a bold, pungent flavor with a hint of bitterness, and the flavor can vary depending on the color of the seeds.

With this in mind you can experiment and make a truly original mustard blend by changing up the amounts of the three different colors. My recipe has a nice spicy heat profile using a combination of yellow and brown seeds. Try my recipe out and then you can experiment next time.

  • Yellow mustard seeds: Yellow mustard seeds are mild and slightly tangy.
  • Brown mustard seeds: Brown mustard seeds are sharper and have a more robust flavor than yellow.
  • Black mustard seeds: Black mustard seeds are the most pungent with a bold, intense heat compared to yellow and brown.

Recipe Prep

Homemade Grainy Dijon Mustard in a glass jar with a plate in the background with a hot dog and sauerkraut spread with grainy Dijon Mustard

Make my whole grain Dijon Mustard and blend it until it is smooth. As is this recipe makes a small batch. One jar of homemade grainy mustard. It is simple to make and the flavor is amazing.

It keeps for months and tastes so good on hot dogs, brats and sandwiches.

The first time my husband tasted it he thought it had horseradish sauce in it. The spicy flavor notes are very similar to the spicy mustard you get from the Chinese restaurants.

It is my favorite Dijon Mustard to use to make a spicy Honey Mustard to serve with chicken wings, burgers, hot dogs with sauerkraut and sandwiches.

What is honey mustard used for?

  • Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce: It's a classic dip for chicken tenders, nuggets, fries, pretzels, and even fresh veggies. It's especially great for quick lunches or easy weeknight meals.
  • Meat Marinades or Glazes: It makes a delicious glaze for baked or grilled chicken, pork chops, ham, or salmon. The sugars help it caramelize and create a beautiful, flavorful coating.
  • Making Salad Dressing: Thin it out with a little olive oil and vinegar and you've got a homemade honey mustard dressing that tastes amazing on green salads, pasta salad, or broccoli salad.
  • Roasted Vegetables: Toss carrots, Brussels sprouts, or potatoes with honey mustard before roasting for an easy side dish with lots of flavor.

Recipe FAQ's

Here are a few common questions I've been asked about this recipe.

How long does homemade honey mustard last?

Homemade honey mustard will keep in the refrigerator for about 1 to 2 weeks when stored in an airtight jar or container. Because it's made fresh without preservatives, it's best to make small batches and keep it chilled.

How can I make honey mustard thicker or thinner?

To thicken it, add a little more mustard or mayonnaise. To thin it out for salad dressing or marinades, whisk in a small amount of vinegar, lemon juice, or olive oil until you reach the consistency you like.

Is homemade honey mustard sweet or spicy?

It can be either, depending on the mustard and honey you use. A classic version is sweet and tangy, but using whole grain or spicy mustard will give it more depth and a gentle heat while still keeping that balanced honey flavor.
