Homemade Chai Tea Recipe

I suddenly had a huge craving for a cup of Chai Tea yesterday.

I've never made it from scratch before and wasn't sure if I had all the spices that would be needed to make a pot.

After looking at about 4 different recipes that are available online I came up with my own recipe based on the spices I had in my cabinet. After brewing the pot and taking a sip from that warm spicy cup I am so glad I decided to try and come up with a recipe of my own.

Chai Tea Recipe

Ingredients

Water
6 Black Tea Bags
1 ½ cups of Milk, Liquid Coffee Creamer or Half & Half

⅓ cup Rodelle Vanilla Sugar

Spices

2 small cinnamon sticks
3 star anise
½ whole nutmeg grated
6 crushed cardamon pods
⅛ tsp ground cinnamon

1) Assemble spices, crush cardamon pods and break cinnamon sticks in half.

2) Fill pot with water, add all the spices to pot and bring to a boil. Boil at least five minutes. Ten minutes for a stronger spice flavor. I boiled my pot of spices for about seven minutes and it had a very nice spicy flavor. Some chai teas are way too spicy for me but seven minutes gave me a nice mellow spice flavor, not over powering.

3) Add tea bags to pot of water and spices. Steep tea 8 - 10 minutes and remove tea bags. Tea gets very bitter if steeped too long.

4) While tea steeps warm your dairy of choice in a small pot until bubbles form along the inside edges of the pot. Remove from heat and whisk until foamy.

5) Remove tea bags and pour tea/spice mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a warmed tea pot.

6) Fill tea cup half way to ¾ full with chai tea and top off with your warmed milk, liquid creamer or half and half.

Dollop whipped cream on top and sprinkle with ground cinnamon.

Enjoy!

How much water should be used in this recipe? What is the yield?

It depends on how strong you like your tea. 3-4 cups of water. Add more or less for your own tastes.

Hello! I came across your blog via SeededBuzz and your post on making jam, and I just wanted to say I love your style of writing. It is really refreshing to find a mother who incorporates her love of family into her love for cooking - drawing both out in beautifully-crafted blog posts.

I am officially following you now - please keep writing!

Can's say I'm much of a cook or baker (or anything kitchen-related, for that matter), but I do love to read about these things and I hope someday I'll improve.
