How to make Herbal Sodas

Making homemade herbal soda  is so simple I want to encourage you all to try it.

It requires only four ingredients

Herb of choice

1 cup of water

1 cup of sugar

club soda or seltzer water

How simple can that be?

If your already growing lemon basil you know that lemon basil tastes or smells nothing at all like any of the other varieties of  basil’s.

If you’ve never smelled or tasted lemon basil I suggest you try growing some.  It’s very easy to grow and readily self seeds.

It has a lovely lemon flavor with a very light, light undertone of sweet basil.

I grow a couple of basil varieties and sweet basil is not one of them. I don’t care for the flavor or the scent.

If you have a garden full of herbs and your trying to find a way to use them this is a great way. Many different herbs can be used to make a soda. Just think of the shock and surprise your guest might have if you served them a herbal soda!

This time I made a lemon basil soda. I have been waiting for months for my lemon basil plant to get big enough so that I could harvest enough herb to make a batch of this soda. Finally I couldn’t wait any longer and I picked what I had on hand.

Gather one cup of lemon basil leaves and stems early in the morning when the herbs essential oils are the strongest.

Rinse them in cool water and drain.

In a pot measure one cup of water and one cup of sugar.

Bring the pot to a boil and remove from the heat. Let the simple syrup cool for about 20 minutes. Once cool crush the lemon basil leaves slightly and put it into the pot of simple syrup. Stir and push the leaves down so they are sunmerged in the syrup.

Let steep for an hour.

After an hour strain the lemon basil from the syrup. Be sure to remove all pieces of the herb. If you don’t it could mold.

Pour your lemon basil syrup into a jar with a lid. Store any left over syrup in the refrigerator. It will keep for a couple of weeks.

But if you enjoy it as much as I did it won’t last that long.

To make a glass of soda measure 2 to 4 tablespoons of lemon basil syrup into a glass filled with ice. Pour club soda or seltzer water over the ice and stir.

Take a big sip and enjoy. Ah it tastes so good!

    I love the unique flavor of lemon basil, but I have never tried to grow them by my own. Perhaps I should try it. How many months will they be ready to serve from the first planted?
