👇See the step by step directions below!

  • butter: Butter adds a rich, creamy texture and depth of flavor that's hard to match.
  • beef stew meat: This is a budget-friendly cut that becomes tender and flavorful under pressure, making it ideal for our Instant Pot creation.
  • diced onion: Onions are a cornerstone of flavor in many dishes, providing a sweet and savory base.
  • minced garlic: Garlic infuses the dish with a pungent, warming flavor that complements the beef beautifully.
  • seasonings bay leaf, salt, and ground black pepper: Bay leaf adds a subtle, earthy flavor while salt and pepper enhance the natural flavors of the other ingredients.
  • beef broth: The dish gets its body from beef broth or stock, which imparts a robust, meaty flavor. You can use homemade beef bone broth if you have it.
  • wide egg noodles: wide egg noodles cooked right in the beef stock for maximum flavor absorption.
  • thickener for the gravy: Corn starch mixed with cold water will thicken our sauce to the perfect consistency.

Mastering the Instant Pot

Using an Instant Pot can take some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it can be a game-changer in your kitchen.

Always make sure to seal the vent before starting the pressure cooking cycle and remember that it will take some time for the pot to come to pressure before the cooking time starts.

For this recipe, we'll use both the Sauté and Pressure Cook functions to maximize flavor.

Step by Step Directions

  • Step 1: Turn on the sauté setting on your Instant Pot and melt two tablespoons of butter inside it. In small batches, brown the beef stew meat, ensuring not to overload the pot. As each batch is browned, transfer it into a separate bowl.

  • Step 2: After browning all the meat, melt the remaining two tablespoons of butter in the pot, and add the diced onion.
  • Step 3: Sauté the onion until it turns translucent, all while scraping the pot's bottom to detach any browned bits of meat stuck to the bottom. A useful hint here is that browning the stew meat in butter results in a deeply flavorful broth.
  • Step 4: Switch off the sauté setting and add the minced garlic into the pot, mixing it well with the cooked onions.

  • Step 5: Add the browned beef stew meat with its juices back to the pot, along with the salt, pepper, and bay leaf.

  • Step 6: Add four cups of beef stock over the meat and stir the mixture.
  • Step 7: Twist the pot lid on and move the steam valve to the sealing position. Press the manual button setting and set the time to 20 minutes.

Note: It might take the Instant Pot around 15 to 20 minutes to reach full pressure before it will start to pressure cook.

  • Step 8: Once the pressure cooking time has finished, perform a quick release of the steam, then carefully remove the pot lid.
  • Step 9: Add the uncooked egg noodles to the pot and stir them in. Pour an additional one or two cups of beef broth to ensure all the noodles are submerged. Replace the lid, close the valve, and push the manual button setting the timer for a 2-minute cooking interval.

After this, perform a quick release of the steam before removing the lid.

  • Step 10: Check if the noodles are cooked to your preference. If they are, stir the cornstarch slurry until it is fully dissolved, then pour it into the pot.

  • Step 11: Press the sauté button and allow the mixture to come to a simmer. As the broth simmers, it will start to thicken. Once it has thickened to your liking, switch off the sauté setting and serve your delicious Instant Pot Beef and Noodles.

Using cooked noodles

In case you want to use already cooked egg noodles:

  • After completing the pressure cooking step and performing a quick steam release, add the precooked wide noodles to the pot and continue with the step of adding the cornstarch slurry.
  • Follow the same instructions for thickening the beef broth before serving.

Storing and Freezing

  • If you end up with leftovers, they can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days.
  • To freeze, allow the beef and noodles to cool completely before transferring to a freezer-safe container. It can be frozen for up to three months.
  • To reheat, thaw overnight in the fridge and then warm on the stove or in the microwave.

Variations

While this recipe is delicious as it stands, there are countless ways you can tweak it to suit your personal preferences. Here are a few suggestions:

  • You could add some sliced mushrooms or green peas for extra veggies, or sprinkle over some grated Parmesan for a cheesy twist.
  • If you like a hint of spiciness, consider adding a chopped jalapeno or a pinch of red pepper flakes when sautéing the meat.
  • Try adding a splash of cream or a dollop of sour cream before serving for a creamy, indulgent twist. This works particularly well if you've also added mushrooms.

Remember, cooking is about creativity and personal taste, so don't be afraid to experiment with different ingredients and flavors to make this recipe your own!
