If you love stuffed cabbage but hate the work to fill those cabbage leaf rolls you can make Crock Pot Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls instead.

All your favorite flavors of stuffed cabbage rolls slow cooked in the crock pot without all the work is my kind of crock pot recipe.

Unstuffed cabbage in a bowl.

Crock Pot Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls are made with seasoned ground beef, the rich flavors of tomato and fresh cabbage that has been cut up into bite size pieces.

I took my favorite family recipe of stuffed cabbage rolls like my mom made and made it even easier to make.

The hardest part of this unstuffed cabbage roll recipe is browning the ground beef.

But once you have the ground beef browned all you do is layer the unstuffed cabbage roll ingredients into the crock pot and let my favorite appliance do all the work.

Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls can be made with or without white rice.

How To Serve Crock Pot Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls

Crock Pot Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls with cooked white rice or without?

If you are avoiding carbs you can skip adding white rice to the crock pot, as I have.

If you want to add the white rice and cook the rice in the tomato sauce of the unstuffed cabbage rolls recipe you can add ¼ cup of Minute Rice to the crock pot 30 minutes before serving.

Or you can cook white rice separately on the stove and add a tablespoon or two to each serving bowl.

Or you can fill the bottom of a serving bowl with about ¾ cups of cooked white rice.

Spoon the crock pot unstuffed cabbage rolls right over the cooked rice and serve it like Unstaffed Cabbage Rolls Casserole.

How To Make Instant Pot Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls

This Crock Pot Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls recipe can easily be converted to an Instant Pot Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls recipe.

  1. Follow all the directions up until loading the crock pot with the ingredients. Layer the Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls ingredients into your Instant Pot in the same order without stirring.
  2. Secure the Instant Pot Lid and turn the valve to the sealing position. Press the manual button and set the timer for 4 minutes. Once the timer goes off carefully quick release the steam and turn the Instant Pot off.
  3. Carefully remove the lid and stir. Serve over cooked white rice if desired.

How to make Crock Pot Unstuffed Cabbage

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef, browned
  • 1 medium head of cabbage, cored and cut into pieces and rinsed well
  • 1 medium onion, peeled and diced
  • 3 large cloves minced garlic, (1 tablespoon)
  • 1 teaspoon salt,
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 14 oz can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 cans condensed Tomato Soup (10 oz cans)
  • 1 cup of water

Directions

  1. Place the ground beef in a skillet and season with salt, and pepper. Brown for about 5 minutes and add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Continue to brown the meat until no longer pink.
  2. Remove the skillet from the stove and drain the ground beef.
  3. Cut the cabbage in quarters and with a sharp knife remove the core. On a cutting mat or board cut the pieces of cabbage into large pieces. Place the cabbage pieces into a clean colander and rinse well. Allow to drain.
  4. Place half of the cabbage pieces into the bottom of a crock pot. I used a 7-quart slow cooker.
  5. Add half the ground beef, the teaspoon of salt and pepper and one teaspoon of garlic powder and the diced tomatoes to the crock pot.
  6. Layer the remaining cabbage pieces to the crock pot and spread the remaining ground beef over the cabbage.
  7. In a small bowl or a spouted measuring cup combine the two cans of condensed tomato soup and 1 cup of water. Pour the mixture over the rest of the ingredients in the crock pot.
  8. Place the lid on the crock pot and cook on high for 4 hours or low for 6 to 8 hours or until the cabbage is tender.

Cooking Tips

  • Never drain browned beef into your sink. Carefully hold a colander over the garbage can and pour the ground beef into the colander so the grease goes into the garbage can. Place the colander into the skillet and allow the ground beef to continue to drain into the skillet.

When do I put the garlic cloves in? Does it go into the meat when browning or into the pot with the cabbage?

Lee you can add it when browning the ground beef or when adding the ingredients to the crock pot. Thanks for letting me know I left that step out of the instructions. Enjoy!

I hope you enjoy it. Grease down the drain is such a no no. I, of course, also learned the hard way many years ago myself. Thanks for stopping by!
