What Is the Best Way to Freeze Fresh Seafood?

Freezing seafood properly ensures it stays fresh, flavorful, and safe to eat. Whether you’re an angler bringing home a fresh catch or stocking up on shrimp, clams, or lobster, here’s how to freeze seafood the right way.

☝ Top Tip!: Packaging is key to preserving the quality of your seafood. Improper packaging can lead to freezer burn and wasted food.

🦀Steps for Freezing Fresh Seafood

  1. Prepare Your Seafood:
  • Clean and gut fish promptly if needed.
  • Rinse shellfish (like clams, mussels, or shrimp) thoroughly to remove sand or debris.
  • Depending on how you plan to cook shrimp you might want to de-head and peel them before freezing.
  1. Portion Your Seafood:
  • Divide seafood into meal-sized portions for convenience.
  1. Choose the Right Packaging:
  • Use heavy-duty quart or gallon freezer bags, or vacuum-seal portions with my favorite food saver vacuum sealer (affiliate link). Vacuum sealing removes air, preventing freezer burn and ice crystals.
  1. Label Each Package:
  • Include details like the type of seafood, portion size, freezing date, and a “best-by” date. Use Seafood Freezer Meal Labels for easy organization.
  1. Freeze Quickly:
  • Lay packages flat in the coldest part of the freezer for faster freezing, which preserves quality and texture.

How Long Does Seafood Last in the Freezer?

When properly packaged, most seafood can last:

  • Fish fillets: 6–8 months
  • Shellfish (shrimp, clams, mussels): 3–6 months
  • Lobster: Up to 12 months

Avoid freezing seafood in thin plastic bags or containers that aren’t freezer-specific, as this can lead to freezer burn. I’ve made that mistake before and ended up wasting food and money. Since switching to proper packaging, I’ve never looked back!

Make sure your bulk-buying efforts save you money by following these tips:

  • Use heavy-duty freezer-specific bags or vacuum-seal your portions to prevent freezer burn.
  • Freeze fish and seafood in meal-sized portions for easy meal prep.
  • Always a label, with dates, and instructions to stay organized.

🖨️Recommended Printing

My labels are designed to fit Avery TrueBlock Printable Shipping Labels (#15264) for a perfect, smudge-proof finish.  I have printed them with my home printer and tested the labels in my freezer. My ink has never smudged or run.

The labels are permanent when affixed to zip top plastic bags or vacuum sealer bags and will not fall off while in the freezer. If using on glass or reusable plastic containers I suggest using the Avery 6464 Label for best results.

FAQs

💧 Are these labels waterproof?

  • Most inkjet printers use water-based ink, which may run if exposed to moisture. For waterproof labels, print with a laser printer.

🖨️ Recommended Printing Tips
