Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 F. degrees.
  • In a large bowl beat the butter and cream cheese together with an electric hand mixer until lump free and creamy.
  • Add the granulated sugar to the bowl and beat in for 1 or 2 minutes until the sugar is combined. Add the almond and vanilla extract to the bowl and beat in.
  • Add ½ of the all-purpose flour to the bowl and beat on low until the flour is combined with the ingredients. Add the remaining flour to the bowl and beat until the flour is completely mixed in with the rest of the cookie dough ingredients. Scrape the sides of the bowl with a silicone spatula and beat again.
  • Divide the spritz cookie dough into three small mixing bowls.
  • In the first bowl squeeze one drop of pink gel food coloring. This will make the lightest colored pink cookies. In the second bowl squeeze 9 drops of pink gel food coloring, which will make the medium dark Ombre cookies. In the third bowl squeeze 12 drops of pink food coloring to make the darkest of the pink cookies.
  • Fill a Spritz cookie dough press with the dough. Press heart shaped cookies out onto an aluminum baking sheet.
  • Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes just until the edges of the cookies are slightly golden.
  • Remove baking sheet from the oven and place the baking pan on a cooling rack for 5 minutes. Transfer the cooled cookies to a cooling rack. Repeat until all of the cookies have been baked.
  • Cool the cookies completely before decorating with a powdered sugar glaze and sprinkles.
  • Store the cookies in an air tight container for up to a week.
  • Makes 5 dozen cookies.

Recipe Expert Tips

  • Spritz cookie dough: Any favorite Spritz cookie recipe can be used.
  • Food coloring: Americolor gel food coloring is my food coloring of choice. You get the best colors with little fading after baking.
  • Cookie press tip: Wash and dry all parts of the cookie press when you change over to each colored batch of cookie dough. This will prevent the next batch of cookies from have streaks of the previous colored cookie dough.
  • Cookie decorations: Drizzle baked cookies with a powdered sugar glaze and decorate with sprinkles. You can find the step by step directions for making the glaze here.
Expert Tips for making Ombre colored cookies
  • Keep in mind that the color of the unbaked cookie dough will vary slightly from the baked cookies.
  • The type of food coloring you use will make a big difference in the finish cookie colors. Do not use liquid food coloring. Use a gel or paste type of food coloring for the best colors. I recommend Americolor gel food coloring. It will yield the best and brightest cookie colors.
  • Mix the food coloring into the cookie dough one color at a time starting with the palest pink color. You will be able to judge how many drops of food coloring to use in the next batch of cookie dough. Different brands of gel food coloring will have a different color intensity.
