Instructions

  • Open the package of Oreo cookies and count out 40 cookies. Set the extra cookies aside to crumble and use as a topping.
  • Place the whole cookies into a food processor. Place the lid on and hit the pulse or high setting. Run the food processor until all of the cookies are turned into fine crumbs.
  • Add the softened cream cheese to the food processor. Pulse or run on low until the cream cheese is mixed into the cookie crumbs. If adding peppermint flavoring add it now and pulse for about a minute to mix it in to the truffle filling.
  • Transfer the filling to a bowl. Use a 1 inch dough scoop to measure the filling. Roll the Oreo cookie balls into shape.
  • Place each dough ball on a cookie sheet that has been lined with parchment or wax paper.
  • Place the tray into the refrigerator to chill.
  • While the dough is chilling melt the chocolate wafers, almond bark or candy melts for the truffle coating.
  • Use a fork or candy dipping tool to lower the truffle into the melted chocolate. Lift the ball up and let the excess chocolate drip from the ball before transferring it to the lined baking sheet. As you dip each truffle sprinkle the tops with holiday themed sprinkles, crushed cookies or crushed candy canes
  • Place the trays in a safe area in a cool spot in your home to allow the chocolate coating to hard.
  • Trim the chocolate at the base of each truffle with a sharp straight edge knife.
  • Serve the truffles in mini paper cups on mini cake stands for a pretty presentation on your dessert table at your holiday celebration.

Recipe Expert Tips

  • This recipe uses 40 regular stuff Oreo cookies. The package sizes have recently changed the number of cookies. Buy a family size package and crush a few of the extra cookies and use for decoration.
  • The dipping chocolate: the quality of the chocolate or candy coating you use to dip the Oreo truffles in does matter. Buy the best you can afford.
  • peppermint extract is very strong. Start with ¼ teaspoon and taste. Add a drop or two more for more peppermint flavor.
  • Make ahead and freeze. After rolling the truffle balls you can freeze them before dipping in melted chocolate.
  • If you don't have a chocolate dipping tool use a plastic fork with the center tines snapped off instead.
  • Chocolate will crack if you try to dip cold cookie dough balls into warm melted chocolate. To prevent this it is important to bring the truffles to room temp before dipping.
  • Hardening the chocolate coating: I do not recommend hardening the warm chocolate coating in the refrigerator. I prefer to allow the chocolate to harden at room temperature to prevent moisture from forming on the chocolate coating.
