All dried beans are not equal. As much as I love to save money I have learned that the cheaper store brand beans are not as high quality as a brand name dried beans. Cooking times may vary depending on the brand of beans you buy. The cheaper store brand beans seem to take longer to cook. I have come to rely on Camellia dried beans or any other quality brand.
If you do not have a leftover ham bone to cook with you can buy precooked ham, a ham-hock and in a pinch, you could even use a pound of thick sliced bacon for this recipe. The bacon will add flavor but you will not have any thick chunks of ham in the cooked soup.
