Happy New Year!
Yes I know I am a bit late. January is almost half way over.
I hope this new year is going to be better then last year for everyone.
A few weeks ago I found out about a new Farmer’s Market.
Living in Florida you would think I would have my pick of Framers Markets to visit. Surprisingly not so. The few that I have found would make some of you laugh. I have seen pictures of blogger’s shopping at their farmers markets and when I think about the ones I have visited here I have laughed out loud myself.
To my knowlegde there were three “Farmer’s Markets” here. All three of them being down town. A forty five minute drive in heavy traffic at this time of the year. On the rare occasions that I did wander that way and stopped at the Farmers Market’s, one of which is located under an underpass in down town Fort Myers I was dissapointed by the small selection of fruits and vegetables being offered. Not to mention what I was looking for in the atmosphere of a farmers market. I would love to be able to buy fresh, seasonal produce from the person that actually grew it. Not from someone who bought it from a California grower.
Also at the time no one was selling organic. Now things may have changed since it has been a few years since I went to that farmers market. I don’t know since I rarely go down that way and the crates of California produce I found there at the time really ticked me off.
For the record I do not eat organic produce regularly. To be honest it is very expensive and I can’t afford it. If I find organic produce on sale or for the same price as non organic then I will buy it. But what I was hoping to find were some local farmers to talk to.
My daughter and I visited a new farmers market. We found out about it by accident as my daughter was looking for something else at a local park. She wanted to see if they had any Christmas activities going on that we could take my granddaughter to. Both of us was very excited by what the flyer said was available.
Local and organic produce, fresh bread, cheese, flowers, plants, handmade soaps and fresh pickles, jams and arts and crafts were listed on the online flyer.
I was very excited and happy at the large selections available. I would have liked to see more stalls of fresh produce but it was only the second week it had been opened and I hope between now and the end of April when they close there will be an even bigger selection.
There was only two stalls that offered organic but I thought the prices were very good especially at this stall.
Fresh Homemade Salsa and corn chips
I saw some of the biggest carrots I have ever seen at this stall
Aren’t they huge? These are not organic but are grown in the area I believe. Next time I go I am going to ask the ladies who run this stall. I fell in love with Papblano peppers that I bought here. I didn’t get a picture of of the peppers but they had a few different pepper varieties. I can not believe that I have never eaten a Papblano before now. They are my new favorite pepper!
These tomatoes look beautiful. I am afraid to see what the prices are going to go up to during the summer months. Florida has been hit hard with 4 different freezes in just a couple of weeks in November and December. This is has been one of the worst winters and many crops were lost. The outrageous prices you will begin to see in the grocery store will be because of the winter freezes. I plan on growing some of my own vegetables this year for this very reason.
This was one of my favorite booths. The Happy Pickle guy cracked me up. I bought some of his homemade dill pickles and have to say they were some of the best pickles I have ever eaten. I also want to make some of my own pickles this summer. I have my curby cuke seeds already and should start them now.
He had pickles and stuffed olives. Maybe next time I will try out the olives.
There were many other goodies available. I am looking forward to going back again soon. I also found out there is another Farmers Market on Thursdays in the parking lot of a local mall. I may swing by there tomorrow just to see if they have anything different available.
