Have you been needing a little push to get out from in front of the computer and out of that chair you spend hours sitting in? The Jawbone Up Band is a new approach to getting healthy and easily keeping track of the amount of steps taken, exercise activities you do, your sleep patterns and even the food you eat.

I was so excited to get the chance to review the Jawbone UP Band for Best Buy. I am guilty of not leading a healthy lifestyle. I don’t exercise much. We all know that is not a healthy way to live.  I need to make some changes now. How about you?

Right before this review opportunity came my way I decided it was time to do something for my health. I decided to start walking.  In the past when I walked I had an inexpensive Pedometer to track the number of steps I was taking in a day.  Before my Jawbone UP was delivered I went out and bought another Pedometer so I could see how many steps I was taking during my daily walks. I kept a daily log and I immediately noticed it was not tracking my steps correctly! I was anxious for the UP Wristband to arrive!

When it finally arrived I couldn’t believe all the things it would track for me.

I immediately charged up the Band and downloaded the UP app to my phone which is available for Apple or Android devices. I setup my Up account and I was ready to go.

How does UP track my movement and sleep?

UP uses a precision motion sensor and powerful algorithms to passively track and quantify your steps, distance, calories, active time, and idle time. It calculates calories burned based on your age, gender, height and weight, along with activity intensity and duration. UP uses Actigraphy to track your sleep, monitoring your micro movements to determine whether you are awake, in light sleep, or in deep sleep.

Activity tracking by the Jawbone UP Band

Walking, Exercising and Activities:

  • The minute you slip the wristband on it starts tracking your steps and movements in the background. It took a couple of days for me to get used to wearing the wristband but it wasn’t long before I totally forgot it was there.
  • The app displays your data, lets you add things like meals and mood, and delivers insights that keep you moving forward.
  • Tracks the number of steps taken.
  • Calculates calories burned.
  • You can log workouts like yoga, walking and any type exercise. And it will tell you the number of calories burned.
  • Tracks your sleep patterns. And it will tell you the amount of time for deep sleep and light sleep.
  • It has an Idle Alert that you set the amount of time when you need to be reminded to get up and move. I set my Idle Alert for 60 minutes. If I haven’t moved in 60 minutes the Band vibrates and reminds me I need to get up and move around. The great thing about that is I can still work on the computer and move my hands and arms to type but 

The Band is easy to Sync to the App on your phone or tablet by plugging the Band into the headphone jack of any cell phone or tablet.

It uploads the info it has been tracking and shows you in detail how you many steps or movements you have taken. The information is stored in the App so you can go back and compare days to see how you are doing.

 

It also gives you tips and hints on how to you live a healthier life based on the information the Band has collected.

Although I haven’t used the Log Food or Drink option much I did try it out. If you are keeping track of your food or drink intake  the App is preloaded with many different foods and drink items. It shows the calorie and nutritional information. You can also  manually add items that are not preloaded into the App.

There are so many other options available that I haven’t had a chance to dig into deeper. I highly recommend the Jawbone Band for anyone who is interested in living a healthier life or starting a diet or fitness program.

I love my Jawbone UP Band and have been logging my activities since the day I received it. It has been a huge help in getting me moving more especially with the Idle Alarm. Every time it goes off I get up and move around either by cleaning something at home or taking a short walk around the house or yard. I’ve set my daily step goal as 6000 steps. I haven’t reached the goal every day but by being reminded to get up and move by the Idle Alarm I have increased my step and movements quite a bit since I started wearing it.

Although not waterproof the Band can be splashed but not submerged in water so normal everyday wearing is fine. I remove mine when showering, swimming or washing dishes by hand.

    my son just got one and he loves it…he was showing me it and i want one…they are very cool

  2. I’ve been umming and ahhing over getting a wrist based activity tracker for a long time! I think I’ve narrowed it down to a Jawbone or a Fitbit, though Jawbone has an updated version of the UP, the UP24. I’m not sold on the colors though. If I’m wearing something on my wrist for the world to see I want it to at least look pretty. :)

    • Ashleigh that’s why I went with the Black band. Hopefully they will come out with some other colors. But I am really impressed with the UP app. It is really detailed and gives you tips based on your movement, food and sleep.
