 Ball Prize Pack Giveaway

Let’s Celebrate!

National Can It Forward, Ball Canning, Live Canning event, Online Canning event

National- Can-It-Forward Day is August 17th

National Can-It-Forward Day 2013

This year National Can-It-Forward Day will be August 17th. Are you ready? How are you planning on celebrating? Are you canning some fresh fruit and veggies from your garden? If you are I am jealous. It has been a few years since I had my own garden. Space is limited where I live so I have to be satisfied with container gardening.

If you don’t have a garden then if you are lucky enough to live where there is a great Farmer’s Market you can just pick up some  fresh veggies and fruits to can there. Farmer’s Markets are the next best thing to home grown!

Host a Canning Party

Are you planning on hosting your own canning party? What? You have never thought to host a canning party? Why not? What a great way to spend time  with some of your best friends and family then to gather together and can some jam or jelly. Back in the day that’s what women did in communities all over the country.

Can-It-Forward-Day Live Event Line Up:

Well if you can’t host a canning party or can some goodies yourself you can come hang out with Ted Allen, the Food  Network’s Chopped host, two-time Emmy and James Beard award-winning chef and cookbook author at the Union Square Greenmarket in New York City. The live demonstration starts at 10AM  and goes till 2PM EST. There is a full line up of canning experts and crafters doing live demos during that time.

  36. I first tried my hand at water-bath canning a couple of years ago when the neighborhood apple trees were so fruit-laden I just had to preserve the harvest (applesauce, apple butter, apple jelly, apple slices in light syrup for pie, spiced diced apples in syrup for waffles or crisps). Since then, I’ve made blueberry jam, blueberries in light syrup, and clementine marmalade, and just this week I made peach jam (which came out much too soft but tastes good). Even after all that, I’m still not comfortable with it, and hope to pick up some tricks and tips on Can It Forward Day. (Hope that wasn’t TMI!)

It sounds like you jumped right in! You are so lucky to have a very generous neighbor. I wish I lived where apples grew. I would have so much fun canning those apples. Down here in Florida I have to make due with citrus which although we love to eat it fresh I have only made marmalade and a star fruit jam once or twice. No one in the family liked the marmalade except for me!

      • I’m generally the only one here who eats the jam, jelly, and marmalade, too, so I know how you feel. But I do bake with them, which everyone enjoys. And the pretty jars make great gifts.

Last year there wasn’t one good apple to be had, but this year looks like another bumper crop. We live in a rural area, so I just gather them up when I’m out walking, and there are several different varieties so the season lasts a long time.

I would love to have citrus fruits that readily available! Up here in Maine, they’re almost prohibitively expensive–a lemon can cost a dollar. Lucky you!

  37. I’ve only been canning for a few years. So far this year I’ve made a variety of dill pickles (spears, slices and whole pickles), bread and butter pickles, pickled green beans, pickled radish, hot pepper jam, and sweet pickle relish. I’m still waiting for my tomatoes to ripen for tomatoes for chili, and stewed tomatoes.

  38. I have only canned Jam — if that counts, not the freezer kind.

  39. I grew up in a family that canned; and as a mother of five, continued that tradition as a way to save money and feed my children things that aren’t packed full of preservatives and other crap. I know that homemade gifts are the best and often will give my grown children jars of jam, homemade vanilla, etc. at Christmas or on other occasions. I’m waiting on some wild plums to ripen right now and will probably make jam with them.

  40. I just started canning this year. Loving all the resources online to experiment more!

  41. I just started canning this year and I love it!!! It’s pretty addictive once you get the hang of it.

  42. I am fairly new to canning!

  43. Elizabeth B says:

Brand new! I’m going to start canning this year!

  44. I am new to canning, but would love to give it a try.

  45. I love canning salsa from my home grown tomatoes.
